Windowsen Runway: A Cyberpunk Escape in Shanghai
In the heart of Shanghai, amidst the bustling cityscape, a bold fashion statement emerged on the eve of Halloween. The runway show by Windowsen, a Chinese designer brand, showcased a cyberpunk universe where fantasy and reality intertwine. The front row buzzed with excitement as a leopard drag queen exclaimed, 'Something fierce is coming!' and the crowd shrieked in anticipation.
The designer, Sensen Lii, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, transformed the sleek Modern Art Museum into a dystopian underworld. His collection, titled 'Mission X: Windowsen Hybrid Interface Project 2026', is a theatrical and sporty-couture masterpiece. Lii's love for retro-futurism and sci-fi escapism is evident in this immersive space, set against a backdrop of crashed spacecraft.
The highlight of the show was Lii's collaboration with Nike, resulting in two sneaker models that blend the Air Max Muse with a 'Space Opera' and 'Aliens' twist. These sneakers, released on Nike's Snkrs app and in select stores, quickly sold out, a testament to their unique appeal.
The runway featured a diverse cast, including drag queens, influencers, and atypical models, showcasing Lii's dramatic designs. Knee-high silicone boots, loud clubwear, rhine-stoned hoodies, and deconstructed motorcycle jackets dominated the catwalk. Lii's cyberpunk aesthetic and high-octane color palette tapped into the growing interest in escapism fashion, particularly the Y3K aesthetic, which originated on Xiaohongshu, China's social commerce platform.
Beyond Y3K, the 'rich baby girl' style and New Chinese style are emerging as influential cultural tribes on Chinese social media, offering a rich tapestry of escapist expression. Lii's commitment to creating the ideal Y3K footwear, including his meticulously crafted silicone boots, is a testament to his attention to detail and artistic vision.
Despite the financial investment, Lii's focus on experimental garments and personal expression remains unwavering. His collaboration with Nike is the second local design partnership for the brand this year, following a pop-up at Shanghai's Fotografiska. Lii's unique approach to fashion and his willingness to push boundaries make him a notable figure in the industry, even if it means trading commercial sensibility for artistic freedom.
