Guerrero's 14-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays was a significant milestone. However, the negotiation process was far from straightforward. Early last spring, Guerrero publicly announced that an extension agreement had not been reached before the imposed spring training deadline. But, as he revealed to Pujols, the Blue Jays and his representatives continued negotiations long after the deadline passed.
The $500 million extension, finalized days before the deadline, was a result of these persistent talks. Guerrero's representatives and the Blue Jays ownership directly negotiated the deal, ensuring Guerrero's commitment to Toronto for the next 14 years. The agreement was officially announced by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal on April 7, 10 games into the Jays' 2025 campaign, but the deal was actually agreed upon much earlier.
World Series Showdown: Yamamoto vs. Ohtani
The 2025 World Series presented a formidable challenge for the Blue Jays. Guerrero described it as facing baseball's 'dream team,' filled with MVPs and Cy Young Award winners. Among them, Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way star Shohei Ohtani stood out. Ohtani, a four-time MVP, started two games on the mound, reached base 18 times, and drove in five runs.
However, Guerrero revealed that the real challenge wasn't Ohtani as a pitcher. Instead, he praised Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who pitched 17 2/3 innings across two starts and a heroic Game 7 relief appearance, allowing just two runs. Yamamoto's performance earned him the World Series MVP award, solidifying his status as a dominant force in the series.
A Father's Influence: From Fear to Respect
Guerrero's relationship with his Hall-of-Fame father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., has evolved over the years. Guerrero Jr. initially struggled to distinguish fear from respect towards his father. However, during his time in Tampa after the 2023 season, he initiated more frequent communication, texting his father each morning and chatting on the phone.
Now, Guerrero Jr. prioritizes his father's input, making him the first person he contacts when he wakes up. This transformation in their relationship showcases the power of open communication and the positive impact it can have on personal growth.
2026 Goals: Homers and Plate Vision
Guerrero's 2026 objectives are twofold. He aims to increase his qualified walk-rate, which was 11.9 percent last year, and emulate Juan Soto's elite plate vision. Soto's 17.8 percent walk-rate is the second-highest in baseball, behind Aaron Judge. However, Guerrero believes that elite plate vision is an innate talent, not something that can be easily acquired.
His primary goal, however, is to hit more homers. Last year, Guerrero launched 23 balls over the fence during the regular season, his fewest in a 162-game season since his rookie campaign. In the postseason, he hit eight homers in just 18 games, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure against top-tier pitching.
