Visma | LaB's Plan to Crack Tadej Pogacar in the 2026 Tour de France (2026)

Visma | Lease a Bike's bold strategy for 2026: A deep dive into their transfer moves and ambitions

The cycling world is abuzz with the latest moves from Visma | Lease a Bike, as they gear up for a season of ambitious goals and strategic transfers. With a focus on long-term development and a deep talent pool, the team is setting its sights on the Grand Tours and Monuments, aiming to challenge the top teams.

The Transfers: A Blend of Experience and Potential

Visma | Lease a Bike has made some bold moves in the transfer market, bringing in riders with significant upside while also letting go of some recognizable names. Among the departures are Olav Kooij, Tiesj Benoot, Dylan van Baarle, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Attila Valter, and Simon Yates. In their place, they've signed nine new riders, including Louis Barré, Davide Piganzoli, Timo Kielich, Anton Schiffer, and the more experienced Bruno Armirail and Filippo Fiorelli.

Grischa Niermann, the Head of Racing, explains their approach: "We’ve lost Olav, Tiesj and the others, but we’ve also committed to long contracts with Matteo and Matthew. They haven’t become any cheaper. Other teams have more budget, but our philosophy remains consistent. We look for riders who can develop."

The New Arrivals: Hidden Gems Unveiled

Some of the new signings might not have been household names, but they have the potential to make a big impact. Filippo Fiorelli, for instance, had been flying under the radar for years, and Davide Piganzoli was a surprise third-place finisher in the Giro dell’Emilia and Tour de l’Avenir. Niermann admits, "Patrick Broe, our Head of Strategy, watches every race and analyses everything in detail. He's the one who pointed out these gems to me."

Experience and Versatility: Bruno Armirail's Role

Bruno Armirail, a rider with a lot of experience and a strong engine, is another key addition. While he won't be a multiple winner, his ability to solve problems and his experience from a top team make him a valuable asset. Niermann notes, "Tiesj is difficult to replace, but we believe we’ve managed it pretty well this way."

2026 Ambitions: Winning the Big Races

Visma | Lease a Bike has set ambitious goals for 2026, aiming to win the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, take at least one Monument, and reach a minimum of 41 victories. Niermann emphasizes, "Our ambition is to win the biggest races, and the Monuments are definitely part of that."

The Spring Classics: A Sprint-Focused Strategy

The team's strategy for the Spring Classics is centered around their fast-paced riders: Matthew, Wout, Christophe, and Axel Zingle. Niermann explains, "The Spring Classics are often decided in sprints. Wout is still our spearhead, and I think the combination with Matthew is a good one."

The Giro and Tour: A New Approach for Vingegaard

With Jonas Vingegaard set to be the key leader for both the Giro and the Tour, Niermann believes he can excel in the Tour more than in the Giro. "We also definitely believe he can be better in the Tour than in the Giro. Our approach over the last five years has worked, but this is also a new approach."

The team's strategy for the Giro and Tour is a calculated risk, and they are confident in Vingegaard's ability to adapt. Niermann concludes, "We don’t have a guarantee, but we do have the data from his Tour/Vuelta combinations — and that makes us believe."

Visma | Lease a Bike's bold strategy and deep talent pool position them as a force to be reckoned with in the cycling world, and their ambitious goals for 2026 will keep them in the spotlight.
