Undersea Cable Glitch: Minimal Internet Slowdown in Taiwan - What You Need to Know (2025)

A recent undersea cable glitch has caused minor internet slowdowns, but the impact has been minimal. The issue occurred on the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) cable, approximately 66 kilometers off Shanghai, China, due to an abnormal power supply. This disruption affected certain foreign websites, particularly during peak hours for users of Chunghwa Telecom's HiNet service. However, major online services like Google, YouTube, Facebook, Netflix, Telegram, and AWS, which rely on local caches or direct connections in Taiwan, remained unaffected. The affected cable has been rerouted, and Chunghwa Telecom is working with the APG cable consortium to resolve the issue. Emergency rerouting has been completed, and general connections to Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore have stabilized outside of peak hours. Repair work is ongoing, and a completion date has not yet been determined.
