UND vs Omaha Preview: World Juniors Absences, Fluctuating Rosters, and a Battle on the Road (2026)

Get ready for an exciting and challenging chapter in UND's hockey season! The team is about to face a unique test without some of its key players.

UND, known for rising to every challenge, now prepares to win without its World Junior stars. This weekend, leading scorer Cole Reschny and defenseman Keaton Verhoeff will be away with Hockey Canada, leaving a gap in the lineup. But here's where it gets interesting: center Ellis Rickwood and defensemen Bennett Zmolek and Jayden Jubenvill might just return in time for the Omaha game on Friday night, adding a twist to the roster.

As the Christmas break approaches, UND will also be without defenseman E.J. Emery and forward Will Zellers if they make Team USA's final roster for a series against Mercyhurst. And if that's not enough, defensemen Jake Livanavage and Abram Wiebe will be participating in the Spengler Cup in Switzerland, adding to the roster fluctuations.

UND coach Dane Jackson acknowledges the challenge, saying, "You're happy you have good depth." Indeed, this is the reality for teams with high-end players; they must adapt to changing rosters.

So, who steps up this weekend? Center Ollie Josephson, center Jack Kernan, defenseman Andrew Strathmann, and defenseman Sam Laurila are expected to play more prominent roles. The Fighting Hawks (12-4) will face Omaha (6-8) for the second time this season, aiming to replicate their success from last month's sweep.

UND's exceptional goaltending, led by Gibson Homer, will be crucial in this series. Omaha coach Mike Gabinet believes his team has a blueprint for success, especially with their strong road record (4-2) compared to their home record (2-6).

But here's the part most people miss: UND's opponent has had a bye week, giving them an edge in preparation. Coach Gabinet hints at their strategy, saying, "You have to do certain things in key situations against certain teams."

In terms of injuries, UND's F Josh Zakreski is out with a lower-body injury, while Omaha's F Jérémy Loranger is questionable. Keep an eye on Omaha's F Brett Hyland, one of their top performers, who missed the first meeting due to injury.

For UND, F Dylan James has been a dominant force against the Mavericks, scoring nine goals in his collegiate career against them. This could be his last chance to face Omaha, depending on playoff matchups.

So, will UND's squad stay focused despite the distractions and roster changes? Will they navigate this challenging period successfully? Find out as the Fighting Hawks take on Omaha this weekend.

The call: A split series.

Friday: Omaha 3, UND 2
Saturday: UND 4, Omaha 1
