In a move that’s set to shake up the college football landscape, the University at Albany has boldly appointed Tom Perkovich as the new head coach of the Great Danes’ football program, marking a pivotal moment for the team’s future. But here’s where it gets exciting: Perkovich isn’t just any coach—he’s a proven leader with over two decades of experience, stepping into the role as only the third full-time head coach in the program’s history. This isn’t just a hire; it’s a statement about where UAlbany football is headed.
‘We are thrilled to welcome Tom, Brandi, Georgia, Trey, and Reed Perkovich to the Great Dane family!’ declared Director of Athletics Mark Benson. ‘From the start, we aimed to find a leader with a track record of sustained success, and Coach Perk embodies that. His ability to build championship cultures and develop student-athletes is unparalleled. As a native New Yorker, his strategic vision aligns perfectly with our goals. We’re eager to see him mold our players into Great Leaders, Great Champions, and Great Danes.’
Perkovich arrives in Albany fresh off an extraordinary tenure at Susquehanna University, where he amassed an impressive 84-25 record over 10 seasons. Under his guidance, the River Hawks became a postseason powerhouse, securing four consecutive conference championships and NCAA Division III Championship appearances from 2022 to 2025. And this is the part most people miss: during that stretch, they went a perfect 27-0 in league play—a testament to his ability to dominate consistently.
‘It’s a tremendous honor to lead the University at Albany’s football program,’ Perkovich shared. ‘I’m deeply grateful to President Dr. Havidán Rodríguez, Director Benson, and Deputy AD Vic Cegles for their trust. I’ve long admired the legacy built by Coach Ford and Coach Gattuso, and I’m ready to build on that foundation. My family and I are thrilled to join the Capital Region community and call Albany home. I can’t wait to get started.’
But here’s where it gets controversial: Perkovich’s success isn’t just about wins—it’s about his ability to thrive under pressure. Named the 2023 Andy Talley Regional Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club, he led the River Hawks to a 10-1 record in 2022, their first Centennial Conference title, and an NCAA Championship appearance. His postseason record is a masterclass in big-game performance, culminating in a landmark 2024 campaign where Susquehanna secured its first NCAA Division III playoff victories in over 30 years. A dramatic win over No. 3 Saint John’s on a game-winning field goal as time expired? That’s the stuff of legend.
Dr. Havidán Rodríguez, UAlbany President, added, ‘We’re excited to welcome Coach Perkovich and his family. His track record of preparing student-athletes for success on and off the field aligns perfectly with our values. I’m confident he’ll resonate with our community.’
In 2025, Perkovich capped his Susquehanna tenure with an 11-3 record, showcasing an explosive offense (39.93 PPG) and a stingy defense (17.79 PPG). His team reached the national quarterfinals, swept conference awards, and produced five Associated Press All-Americans. But let’s not forget his roots: before Susquehanna, he spent nearly a decade at Muhlenberg College, rising from strength and conditioning coordinator to offensive coordinator, where his offenses broke multiple school records.
A Tonawanda, New York native, Perkovich graduated from Canisius University in 2003, where he was a dual-sport standout in football and basketball. On the gridiron, he was a three-year starter, Team MVP, and All-American—a true athlete turned coach.
Now, Perkovich steps into a program steeped in tradition, following legends like Bob Ford, who built UAlbany football from the ground up, and Greg Gattuso, who led the team to its first FCS playoff wins and a 2023 National Semifinals appearance. But here’s the question: Can Perkovich maintain the ‘UAlbany Way’ while pushing the program to new heights in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA)? Only time will tell. One thing’s for sure: his appointment has sparked excitement and debate among fans and critics alike.
What do you think? Is Perkovich the right coach to lead UAlbany to another CAA title and FCS Playoffs? Share your thoughts in the comments—let’s keep the conversation going!
