South Africa Renews Efforts to End AIDS | World AIDS Day 2025, UNAIDS 95-95-95 Progress (2026)

South Africa's unwavering determination to eradicate AIDS takes center stage on World AIDS Day. In a powerful statement, Deputy President Paul Mashatile emphasized the country's theme, "Renewed Efforts and Sustainable Commitments to End AIDS," highlighting the critical need to bolster HIV prevention and treatment initiatives amidst financial constraints.

Speaking from Limpopo Province, Mashatile described the battle against HIV/AIDS as a long-term strategic endeavor, urging sustained momentum even as global priorities evolve. He stressed, "This commemoration serves as a reminder of our unwavering dedication to accelerate our efforts towards ending AIDS."

Mashatile acknowledged South Africa's impressive progress, having surpassed the initial and third UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. However, he also recognized ongoing challenges, particularly in initiating and retaining diagnosed individuals on treatment. South Africa's current statistics stand at 96-80-97, while global figures are at 95-85-92.

The 95-95-95 targets are ambitious goals, aiming for 95% of people with HIV to know their status, 95% of those diagnosed to start treatment, and 95% of those treated to achieve viral suppression.

South Africa's journey has not been without setbacks, including the loss of funding from the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief earlier this year. Despite this, Mashatile expressed the government's commitment to reconnect with approximately 1 million individuals who have discontinued their medication for various reasons.

The deputy president emphasized the importance of strengthening access to treatment and ensuring the retention of those on treatment, especially vulnerable groups like drug users and young women, to prevent stigmatization and promote inclusion.

"But here's where it gets controversial..." Should we prioritize treatment access or focus on retaining those already on treatment? What strategies can effectively address the challenges of initiating and retaining diagnosed individuals? Join the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments below!
