The Pittsburgh Pirates are making a bold move, with their sights set on the highly sought-after free agent, left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez. This move could be a game-changer for the Pirates, but it's a risky one, and here's why.
The Pirates, known for their struggles to find offensive power, have now become one of the most aggressive teams in the race for Valdez. With their starting rotation as their strongest asset, led by the talented Paul Skenes, the addition of Valdez would further strengthen this area. Bill Murphy, the new pitching coach, has a unique connection to Valdez, having worked with him throughout his professional career with the Houston Astros.
But here's where it gets controversial. The Pirates might just be a decoy, a stepping stone for a more competitive team willing to offer Valdez a lucrative short-term deal with opt-outs. The Baltimore Orioles have shown interest throughout the offseason, and teams like the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres are still in the market for starting pitchers. Even the Toronto Blue Jays could join the fray if Valdez's price drops.
The Braves, in particular, would face a higher cost, losing a valuable draft pick for Valdez. The Pirates, on the other hand, would only sacrifice a later pick and would likely do so to secure Valdez's services.
And this is the part most people miss: the Pirates are not just after Valdez. They're actively pursuing offensive upgrades, with designated hitter Marcell Ozuna on their radar. Despite their efforts, they've been outbid for free agents like Kyle Schwarber and Eugenio Suárez, managing to sign only Ryan O'Hearn.
In their quest to improve their league-worst offense, the Pirates have already traded away two starting pitchers, Johan Oviedo and Mike Burrows, in exchange for Jhostynxon Garcia and Brandon Lowe. If they manage to sign Valdez, he would join a rotation that includes Skenes, Mitch Keller, and two promising young starters, Braxton Ashcraft and Bubba Chandler.
The connection between Murphy and Valdez is an intriguing one. Murphy has been with the Astros almost as long as Valdez, joining the organization in 2016, the same year Valdez signed with the team after arriving in the US from the Dominican Republic.
