Kobe Bryant's Iconic Nike Kobe 8 Sneaker Gets a New 'Year of the Horse' Makeover
The legendary Kobe Bryant's Nike Kobe 8 sneaker is set to receive a special 'Year of the Horse' edition, paying homage to his deep connection with Chinese culture. This highly anticipated reissue, known as the Kobe 8 Protro, will be released in a new colorway that blends tradition and innovation.
The Kobe 8 Protro 'Year of the Horse' showcases a vibrant red, blue, and yellow color scheme, capturing the essence of the Chinese New Year. However, a more distinctive version, the EXT colorway, takes center stage with a bold black-based pony hair design. The shoe's upper is predominantly crafted from textured pony hair, while the heel features a suede overlay, adding a touch of luxury. Metallic gold accents provide a subtle contrast, with a snakeskin-printed red insole and a gold horseshoe charm on the tongue, symbolizing Bryant's Chinese zodiac sign.
Nike's Kobe 8 Protro, introduced in 2023, embodies Bryant's vision for a 'performance retro' line. It boasts React foam cushioning, an improvement over the original Lunarlon, and an updated herringbone outsole for enhanced grip and on-court performance. The Kobe 8 Protro also introduced an all-white 'Halo' colorway, a yearly tribute to Bryant's birthday.
Bryant's affinity for China was well-documented. He frequently visited the country for Nike promotions and NBA games, even establishing the Kobe Bryant China Fund in 2009. In a 2017 interview, he expressed his deep connection to the country, stating, 'China is like a second home.'
Nike's dedication to honoring Bryant's legacy extends beyond the Kobe 8. The brand is set to release several 'Year of the Horse' styles, including the Air Force 1 Low, Dunk Low, Ja 3, LD-1000, Shox Z, and a Jordan Brand collection, each paying tribute to Bryant's impact on the world of sports and his enduring legacy.
The Kobe 8 Protro EXT 'Year of the Horse' will be released in spring '26, retailing for $290. It will be available in a special packaging design, further emphasizing the significance of this release. This new colorway, with style code IO8152-001, is a testament to Nike's commitment to celebrating Bryant's cultural influence and his enduring impact on the sneaker world.
