Data centers in the Netherlands are consuming a staggering amount of electricity, equivalent to what approximately 2 million households would use. In the past year alone, these facilities consumed nearly 5,100 gigawatt hours of power, as reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This figure represents a significant increase, nearly doubling over the last five years. Currently, the country hosts about 45 major data centers, each utilizing over 10 gigawatt hours of electricity. While the count of these large facilities has remained relatively stable, their collective energy consumption has skyrocketed—growing from roughly 1,300 gigawatt hours a decade ago to an astonishing over 4,700 gigawatt hours today. In contrast, smaller data centers, which consume less than 10 gigawatt hours, have shown stable consumption patterns.

However, the actual energy usage might be even higher since CBS did not account for organizations that manage their own data storage—such as hospitals and universities—that also contribute significantly to overall consumption.
