A brave bus driver's actions have sparked a heated debate, leaving many questioning the limits of heroism and the boundaries of justice.
In a terrifying incident, a woman, Katalin Kaszas, had her necklace snatched by a fellow passenger while boarding a London bus. The bus driver, Mark Hehir, sprang into action, chasing the thief and ultimately knocking him unconscious in self-defense. Kaszas, who witnessed the entire ordeal, expressed her extreme gratitude for Hehir's intervention, which she described as "terrifying" but necessary.
However, Hehir's heroic actions came at a cost. He was dismissed by his employer, Metroline, for gross misconduct, a decision that was later upheld by an employment tribunal. Despite the support of shadow justice minister Dr. Kieran Mullan, who invited Hehir to Parliament, and Justice Secretary David Lammy, who called Hehir a "hero," the driver's fate was sealed.
Kaszas, a single mother, emphasized the impact of Hehir's presence, stating, "He made me feel safe... I don't feel that safe anymore because I know the next driver isn't going to step off the bus to protect me."
But here's where it gets controversial: CCTV footage played at the tribunal showed the thief throwing a punch at Hehir, leading the 62-year-old to retaliate instinctively. Both men were arrested, and Hehir was later released without further police action. Despite the Met Police's assertion that Hehir's response was "proportionate and necessary," his employment was terminated.
A Metroline spokesperson defended the decision, stating, "The Independent Employment Tribunal has upheld the dismissal as fair... Our priority is to keep staff and passengers safe."
And this is the part most people miss: Kaszas, feeling guilty for being at the center of this controversy, apologized repeatedly to Hehir. "I know it's not my fault, but I still feel guilty because I'm in the middle of everything," she said.
So, where do we draw the line between heroism and misconduct? Is it fair to punish someone for stepping in to prevent a crime, especially when their actions are deemed necessary by the police?
