Haiti Couleurs: From Newbury Hero to Grade 1 Contender? | Betfair Chase vs Coral Gold Cup Analysis (2026)

A thrilling comeback for Haiti Couleurs has sparked a debate among racing enthusiasts! This seasoned champion, fresh from a victorious hurdle race at Newbury, has become the hot favorite for the Coral Gold Cup. But here's where it gets controversial: Rebecca Curtis, the trainer, is eyeing an even bigger prize - a Grade 1 company.

Last season's double winner, Haiti Couleurs, has impressed with its performance under champion jockey Sean Bowen, leading to a cut in odds for the Betfair Chase. Curtis is considering a swift return to action, with the Betfair Chase just around the corner.

"The Betfair Chase is very tempting," Curtis said, "but we'll discuss with the owners. It's a quick turnaround, but this horse is capable of handling it."

And this is the part most people miss: the ground conditions could play a crucial role. With the possibility of quick ground, Curtis might opt for the earlier Betfair Chase over the Coral Gold Cup.

"There are pros and cons to both races," she explained. "Our initial focus was the Coral Gold Cup, but the ground is firm, and the forecast looks dry. It's a tough decision."

The Cheltenham Gold Cup also featured in post-race discussions, with Haiti Couleurs' odds shortening after its victory. Curtis, however, is taking a measured approach, not wanting to rush her star.

"I hope he's a Gold Cup horse," she said, "but I won't force it if he's not ready. His improvement and toughness are remarkable. He stays well and can maintain a good gallop - key attributes for a Gold Cup contender."

Curtis had initially planned to use this race as a prep for Haiti Couleurs' return to fences, but his performance exceeded expectations.

"I knew he'd improved," she added, "and I hoped for a top-five finish, but I always had a feeling he'd win."

Haiti Couleurs' odds have also been trimmed for this month's Betfair Chase and the Grand National.

So, what do you think? Is Haiti Couleurs destined for Grade 1 glory, or will the quick ground at Haydock prove too tempting? Share your thoughts in the comments!
