Fred the groundhog has made his prediction for an early spring in Quebec, joining other Canadian rodents in this annual tradition.
On a brisk Monday morning, as dawn broke, Fred Junior made his appearance from his cozy wooden log cabin. He did not see his shadow, which, according to age-old custom, signals the arrival of an early spring. This optimistic forecast aligns perfectly with predictions from several of Fred's fellow groundhogs, including Wiarton Willie and Shubenacadie Sam.
Fred's track record stands at an impressive 75 percent accuracy, as shared by his spokesperson, Renée Laurendeau. However, she humorously points out that predicting an early spring is always a gamble, given that it requires warmer weather by March 21, a date that traditionally still feels quite wintry.
"We’ll have to wait and see what unfolds and hope to maintain our success rate," Laurendeau added.
The Groundhog Day event in Quebec was pioneered by Roberto Blondin, the mayor of Sainte-Thérèse-de-Gaspé. His inspiration struck 18 years ago during breakfast on Groundhog Day, leading him to seek a groundhog that could supposedly sense when spring would arrive.
"In Val-d’Espoir, small farms are plentiful, so it was easy to find our first Fred. We discovered him in no time at all," Blondin recounted.
Groundhog Day quickly became a beloved celebration in Val-d’Espoir. Sadly, the original Fred passed away three years ago, causing a stir across the province, especially since he died just hours before his much-anticipated prediction.
Nevertheless, Fred Jr. stepped into the spotlight and is given exceptional care, living in a controlled environment that ensures his comfort. According to Laurendeau, he enjoys his own little cabane where he can rest. "He’s back in his condo and will be snoozing until spring arrives," she remarked.
This festive occasion has transformed into a community project in Val-d’Espoir, showcasing the Gaspé Peninsula and fostering a sense of pride among locals. Blondin expressed, "We take great pride in Gaspésie and Val-d’Espoir to have this little creature that brings us so much visibility and joy during the winter months."
In contrast, Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania, the groundhog who started this tradition, did see his shadow, indicating that six more weeks of winter are expected.
