The massive winter storm that swept across the South last month didn't spare the 'Duck Dynasty' team. Jase Robertson, along with Zach Dasher and Al Robertson, shared their chilling tale on the 'Unashamed' podcast. Dasher vividly described the aftermath: 'I’ve named our experience the ice-pocalypse. When I left my house today, and it was nine days ago when this thing hit, I still had ice all over my steps. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t walk to my truck. Now it’s just all slippery … We spent eight days without power.'
But here's where it gets controversial: Was their decision to venture out in such extreme conditions reckless, or a testament to their resilience? Jase recounted how he and his friends braved the storm in an Argo, an extreme-terrain vehicle, after one of them crashed their truck on the ice. The ice was so thick that they had to cut their way through fallen trees with chainsaws for days. As if that wasn’t enough, the water beneath the ice kept rising, adding another layer of danger.
Then came the moment that pushed them over the edge—literally. They spotted thousands of ducks near a blind, and despite the Argo being designed for only two people, they decided to go after them. 'We’re like, we’re going out there, but all we have is this Argo and all of us are in it,' Jase recalled. The Argo struggled as the ice thickened, forcing crew members into the freezing water to clear a path by hand. This raises the question: Was their pursuit of the ducks worth the risk?
The situation took a dire turn when Cade, a young Duck Commander staff member, began showing signs of hypothermia. 'I noticed that Cade started shaking violently,' Jase said. 'He said, ‘Well, somewhere in breaking this ice, I’ve punched holes in my waders.’' A nurse in the group recognized the danger immediately, diagnosing Cade with the early stages of hypothermia. With no medical help nearby, they improvised, sitting him by a fire and urging him to stay alert. Is this a story of survival or a cautionary tale about underestimating nature?
Jase himself wasn’t spared from the storm’s wrath. While cutting fallen limbs, he suffered a chainsaw injury he didn’t even realize at first. 'I looked down, and I was like, it looks like I’ve been in a bar fight,' he said. 'That chainsaw nicked my leg, and everywhere there’s a chain link, I had an open wound, and I didn’t even know I did it.' Later, he reflected on how close he came to disaster: 'It kind of made me realize, well, that could have been a lot worse ’cause I was right at the brink of that and didn’t even realize it.'
The final brush with death came when Jase decided to cut down a massive fallen limb near his garbage cans. Moments after he cleared the area, a limb twice as big crashed down exactly where he had been standing. 'If I would have done this about 30 seconds later, I wouldn’t be here,' he said.
