A remarkable art deco cinema, the Liberty Theatre, has risen from its peeling facade to screen its first film in an incredible 51 years! This iconic building, designed like an ocean liner, once hosted a vibrant cultural scene in the heart of Yass, New South Wales. From comedies to news reels, and even banking services, the theatre was a hub of activity for 35 years. But as television gained popularity, the cinema's final movie was shown in 1974, leaving a void in the community.

A dedicated group of volunteers, the Friends of the Liberty Theatre, embarked on an ambitious journey to restore this historical gem. Jo Mulligan, a member of the group, emphasizes the theatre's uniqueness, stating that only two of its kind remain today. The road ahead is challenging, with costs estimated in the millions, but the passion and determination of these volunteers are unwavering.
"It's a monumental task, given its age," Ms. Mulligan explains. "The structure is sound, but it needs some TLC, and a new roof is essential."
And the efforts have paid off! The group recently installed a state-of-the-art cinema screen and projector, bringing movies back to Yass. For locals like Janno Scanes, who grew up with the theatre, it's an emotional homecoming. "It's incredible to see the seats filled again," she says. "It's been a long journey, and this milestone is truly special."
The early screenings were a huge success, with residents flocking to the theatre for a unique night out. Ian Wearing, a local, believes the entire community is behind this revival. "It's a wonderful step forward for our district," he adds.
Kellie Mossop, a Yass resident for 20 years, had never stepped into the theatre until now. "It's a special experience," she says. "We often travel to Canberra for movies, so having this option locally is lovely."
The Friends of the Liberty Theatre are now working towards a more regular film schedule and have a long-term vision to purchase the theatre from its private owners. They aim to turn it into an arts hub, a place where the community can come together and feel a sense of pride. "We want to protect this heritage for future generations," Ms. Mulligan emphasizes. "By placing it in a community trust, we ensure its longevity and prevent any potential threats to its existence."
